Portfolio Review – Oliver Husain and Sharlene Bamboat

3 Nov 2014, 6:00 to 8:00pm
401 Richmond St. W (4th floor)

Is your portfolio and artist statement telling a compelling story? Are you looking for critical feedback on your most recent project? Do you need insights on how to submit a successful grant or residency application?

We invite SAVAC members to participate in a portfolio review session, facilitated by artist Oliver Husain, and SAVAC Artistic Director, Sharlene Bamboat (bios below).

Geared to both emerging and established artists, the session will provide guidance and practical steps on how to advance your art practice, present and talk about your work with confidence, and successfully apply for grants and residencies.

Four selected SAVAC member artists will have the opportunity to present their work during the portfolio review session. The facilitators will engage with the artists, ask questions and give specific feedback on the work presented.

All SAVAC members are welcome to attend as audience members. The review will be followed by an informal Q&A session, allowing attendees to ask further questions on the topics discussed.

Light refreshments will be served. Childcare will be provided with 48 hours notice and the building is fully accessible.

Oliver Husain is a filmmaker and installation artist with a particular interest in theatrical and cinematic notions of spectatorship and scenery. Husain came to Canada in 2006 having completed a short-film trilogy set in Shanghai, Jakarta and Hyderabad. His work in Toronto has included a number of gallery-based interventions that place the audience in dual roles of spectator and subject. His 2010 show at the Art Gallery of York University, “Hovering Proxies,” was an installation—comprised in part of feather-topped light stands and hand-printed silk scarves, objects which have recurred in other projects—that doubled as a set for a film also featured in the installation. Husain has shown internationally in venues such as ICA Philadelphia and Galeri Nasional Indonesia. A book on his work, Spoiler Alert, was published in 2012. husain.de

Sharlene Bamboat is a Toronto-based, mixed-media artist. Shaped by a queer framework, her work calls into question narratives citizenship and nation building. Through a re-examination of history, Bamboat elicits tongue-in-cheek performative videos and installations to question our contemporary moment marked by colonialism and neoliberalism. Bamboat regularly works in collaboration with artists and academics. Her most regular collaborative partner is artist Alexis Mitchell, and together they form Bambitchell.  Bamboat’s work has been exhibited internationally. She is on the programming committee of the Pleasure Dome Film & Video Collective, sits on the board of VTape, and is the Artistic Director of SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre). sharlenebamboat.com
